Introduction

The Library of Birmingham is a very special project – one that encapsulates Birmingham’s diverse history, its sense of identity, its optimism for the future and its belief in the power of knowledge, learning and culture.
It is a flagship project for the Big City Plan, which will drive forward for the next 20 years of development in Birmingham. The new Library represents the spirit of this new era.
To be built on a prime site on Centenary Square in the city’s Westside, adjacent to the historic Baskerville House, the new Library will connect with Birmingham Repertory Theatre (The REP) with a shared entrance and foyer, a new 300 seat studio theatre and cafe/restaurant facilities creating a new cultural destination.
This new development will be the heartbeat of the regenerated city.
Mecanoo’s design will be a stunning addition to the urban landscape.
This is one of the most significant projects we are working on for our city and for our future generations.
